Lobsters, Leaves, and Local Finds: My Guide to Maine in Autumn

I’ve spent time in Portland - and while it’s absolutely a must-see - it wasn’t until this trip that I truly explored more of what makes Maine feel like “Vacationland.” From heading north to Bar Harbor to wrapping up down south in Kennebunkport, this itinerary gave me a whole new appreciation for coastal New England.

Acting as a tour guide for my parents, who were visiting the Northeast for the first time, made the experience even more special. And truly - there’s nothing quite like fall in this part of the country. Crisp air, colorful foliage, and seafood at every turn… it’s hard not to fall in love.
The Inside Scoop: Where to Rest Your Head in Bar Harbor & Kennebunkport
Acadia Oceanview Motel – Bar Harbor
If you’re looking for a quieter home base near Bar Harbor, this was a great find.
What I loved:
Just outside the hustle of town, but still a quick drive to both Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park
Recently updated, spacious rooms
Patio views overlooking the pool and water (perfect morning coffee spot!)
Complimentary breakfast with plenty of options to start the day right
Heated pool (I skipped it this time—but noted for summer!)
Peaceful setting tucked off the main road
Easy parking and a smaller, more relaxed property feel
Very reasonable pricing for the area and season

Good to know:
Sound carries a bit - you may hear guests above you
Seating in the room could be more comfortable/expanded

Nonantum Resort – Kennebunkport
This property felt like a quintessential coastal Maine experience.

What stood out:
Beautiful riverside setting with easy access to the ocean
On-site experiences like lobster boat tours and a sauna
Walkable to downtown shops and restaurants
Excellent dining options right at the resort
A surprisingly standout breakfast buffet (more on that below!)
Charming coastal décor throughout
Fire pits for cozy fall evenings

Good to know:
Our room had some noise from nearby mechanical equipment at night
Tour groups came through, which brought occasional crowds and bus noise

Crustaceans & Coffee: What We Ate (And What We’re Still Craving)
I say it every trip - I never have enough time to eat everything I want. Maine proved me right again.
Hazel's Take-Out – A fun, classic roadside stop for our first seafood fix (shrimp + crab melt!). Worth it if you’re passing through, but not a must-detour.

Jordan Pond House – You have to try the famous popovers at least once! No reservation? Grab a drink outside—the line moves quickly and the views are worth it.

The Salt Market – Yes, it’s TikTok-famous—but also genuinely good. Great coffee, cute merch, and a cozy stop in a quieter harbor town.

Geddy's – A classic Bar Harbor stop. Lobster rolls were solid, and the mini lobster bake is a fun way to sample a bit of everything.

The Porthole Restaurant & Pub – Stop through Portland to check it out. The food is good, but the real star here is the atmosphere. Sitting outside by the water? That’s the moment.
Coastal Creamery – Ice cream + harbor views = perfection. Try local flavors like blueberry or maple.

Heckman’s Pub (at Nonantum Resort) – One of my favorite meals of the trip - and not even traditional Maine fare! The wings and pretzels were unexpectedly amazing.
Breakfast at Nonantum Resort – Included, but honestly impressive enough that I’d go back even if it wasn’t. Fresh baked goods, hot options, and great service made it a highlight each morning.
The "Vacationland" Edit: How to Spend Your Days in Coastal Maine
Camden – One of my favorite stops of the trip. Charming downtown, beautiful harbor views, and a pace that makes you want to slow down.

JJS Travel Planners Insider Tip: As someone who never skips a bookstore while traveling, this stop was a highlight. Owl & Turtle Bookshop felt like stepping into a perfectly curated local secret - cozy, thoughtfully stocked, and the kind of place where you lose track of time browsing. These are the moments I love most when traveling - finding a book that becomes part of the memory of the place.

Acadia National Park – The main event. Drive, hike, explore - it’s all worth your time.
Don’t miss Cadillac Mountain
Plan ahead if you want sunrise access (lottery system!)
Stop at Jordan Pond and take in the views and a popover.

Jordan Pond

Bar Harbor – Classic coastal Maine charm.
Walk to Bar Island at low tide (just don’t get stranded!)

JJS Travel Planners Insider Tip: Continuing with my favorite simple traditions when traveling, stopping into a local bookstore, and Sherman's Bookstore did not disappoint. It’s the kind of place where you can find everything from local authors to quirky coastal reads. I always try to leave with something tied to the destination - and this time I ended up learning far more about lobsters (and love stories!) than I expected.

Kennebunkport – Perfect for a slower pace.
Visit St. Ann's Episcopal Church for beautiful history and a seaside location

View Walker's Point Estate (the Bush family home)

Walk the beaches and explore the shops

JJS Travel Planners Insider Tip: Another bookstore stop (of course!) at Lupine Books added to the charm of this town. Small, independent, and full of personality - it’s exactly what you hope to find in a coastal New England village.

Rugosa Lobster Tours – This was, without question, one of the standout experiences of the trip - and honestly one of the best boat tours I’ve done anywhere. It wasn’t just a scenic ride (though the views are incredible). This was a fully immersive, hands-on experience that gave a real look into Maine’s lobstering culture. The crew was engaging, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable - they made everyone feel involved from the start.

You’re not just watching - you’re participating. We pulled traps, learned how to measure lobsters, banded claws, and even held them (which was equal parts fascinating and slightly intimidating at first!). It gave me a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into something as simple as ordering a lobster roll.
Another unexpected highlight? Seeing Walker's Point Estate from the water—it’s a completely different perspective than from land.

If you’re deciding whether to book this - do it. It’s one of those experiences that sticks with you long after the trip ends and is convenient to the resort.
Northeast Harbor – Quiet, scenic, and worth a stop to take in the boats and fall leaves. Very quiet and calming.

Your Sign to Head North: Final Thoughts on Falling for Maine
Between the crisp fall weather, the coastal views, and the time spent exploring with my parents, this trip was one I won’t forget. And somehow, between lobster tours and bookstore stops, it felt like the perfect mix of learning, relaxing, and just soaking it all in.
Even leaving my puppy behind felt worth it (and that’s saying something!).
If you’ve been thinking about falling for Maine - this is your sign. It’s the perfect mix of relaxation, scenery, and just enough adventure. Now is the perfect time to start planning your fall adventures!
