Ah, New York City – my beloved urban muse, you’ve been missed since my last visit just two weeks ago! This adventure was a blend of business and pleasure, so I’ll focus on the food and fun since there was lots of both!
An Accommodating Stay at Fairfield Inn Times Square South
Nestled in the bustling Garment District, a stone’s throw from Madison Square Garden, Fairfield Inn Times Square South, offered a quiet and cozy room. The hotel’s merits include its welcoming staff, clean rooms and lobby, free drinks from 4-5 pm, and complimentary breakfast to start your day. However, the firm mattress and less-than-comfy pillows were not to my liking. My initial room, 2121, felt cramped, although not uncommon in NYC. A chat with the front desk staff led to a complimentary upgrade to a room with a little more elbow room and a more spacious bathroom. Despite their hospitality, the bed’s discomfort means I’ll likely seek out new accommodations on my next visit – personal preference prevails!
Broadway Brilliance - Hell’s Kitchen

Hell’s Kitchen is a mosaic of love – finding self-acceptance, the thrill of first-time love, love of the city, losing love, love of learning music, and the complex love between parents and children. Ali, a 17-year-old, was on a quest for freedom and the show led us through the streets of Manhattan in the 1990s. The story had me captivated, rooting for Ali, and singing along to the music of Alicia Keys. The cast delivered an impeccable performance, with Ali’s parents’ portrayal stealing the show. Hell’s Kitchen stands out as a must-see, capturing the essence of New York City in a way that only a true New Yorker like Alicia Keys could envision – it was raw and real.

Slice, Dine, and Savor: A Culinary Journey Through NYC’s Neighborhood Gems
Just down the street from the hotel, Vito’s Slices & Ice served up delectable Sicilian and classic New York-style pizza slices that lived up to their iconic status – a solid 4 out of 5 in my book!

For a casual NBA finals viewing, Burgerology was our go-to, conveniently located next to the hotel. The server was fun and friendly and because we were had a big lunch we shared a couple appetizers – wings, fries, nachos and a pretzel. The fries were the star of the show! Ironically, we didn’t try a burger…The location and tv set up were exactly what we were looking for.
Rewinding to our lunch, we stopped by the iconic John's Pizzeria in Times Square for pizza and wings. It’s a spot that’s definitely worth adding to everyone’s bucket list. Be sure to delve into the history on their website before enjoying their mouth-watering, coal-fired pizza.
For breakfast, we explored two delightful spots. First was Jacob’s Pickles at the Moynihan Train Hall, where sharing a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit proved to be both hearty and scrumptious. The biscuit struck the perfect balance—not too buttery—and the soufflé-style egg added a light touch (if only in spirit!). I only wish we had more time to sample the other culinary delights in the food hall.

We sought out a quintessential diner experience at Tick Tock Diner. It’s the epitome of a classic diner, from the ambiance to the menu. Upon entry, without a hostess stand in sight, a server quickly directed us to our seats. Despite our reservation, it seemed to be of little concern, but the quick service and solid fare more than compensated for the staff’s no-frills approach. It’s definitely worth a visit—just set your expectations accordingly.

Dinner and Drinks – A Prelude and Postlude to Broadway
Before the curtain rose on our Broadway show, my co-worker and I decided to indulge in the culinary delights of Restaurant Row. Our choice? Lady Blue. As we stepped inside, the ambiance enveloped us—a fusion of an upscale bar’s elegance and a lounge’s inviting comfort.

Our appetites led us to share the Loaded Tots and Stinger Flatbread—a duo of delectable starters. The tots, a cascade of flavors, earned a resounding 5 out of 5 from me! While the espresso martini flirted with a hint of chocolate, it fell shy of my expectations. However, the lemon drop martini was a citrusy triumph!

Post-show, we found ourselves at Carmine’s, a place I heartily endorse for anyone yet to visit. Here, we indulged in another round of espresso martinis—each sip a symphony of robust and artful notes.

Celebrating Milestones at DK Restaurant
The city’s vibrant pulse accompanied me into my birthday night, celebrated at DK Restaurant. The service was impeccable, the perfect menu, and the libations divine—a trifecta that promised an unforgettable birthday.

The bar, sparsely populated with just one other couple, hinted at an intimate evening ahead. With a glass of Veuve Clicquot—my champagne of choice—the festivities commenced. Our bartender, Katerina, was a delight; her engaging conversation and warm presence convinced us to dine right at the bar.
The night unfolded with laughter, wine tastings to complement my succulent ribeye, perfectly crisp fries, and a nostalgic soundtrack of 80s and 90s hits. The night ended with a spectacular limoncello birthday cake, light in texture and full of flavor. DK Restaurant is not just a dining spot but a destination for those seeking a memorable evening, conveniently located near Madison Square Garden. Whether you’re craving a scrumptious steak or the freshest seafood, DK Restaurant is a must-visit.

Always Remember Where Dreams Begin
Another NYC trip that included a Broadway show with a side of soul, martinis that dance on your palate, and a treasure trove of culinary delights has come to an end, but the lure of the city won’t keep me away for long!
