Miami Pre-Cruise Experience: A Perfect Start to Your Journey Arrival

Arriving at your port city a day before your cruise is always a smart move, allowing you buffer for any unexpected delays. Plus, it gives you the perfect excuse to explore the vibrant city of Miami!
AC Hotel Miami Wynwood

Our choice of stay was the AC Hotel Miami Wynwood, conveniently located about a 20-minute ride from the airport and just 10-15 minutes from the cruise port. We picked this spot to make the most of our Marriott points, and it turned out to be a fantastic decision. Wynwood is renowned for its dynamic art scene, and the hotel seamlessly blends into this creative vibe with its fun and colorful lobby art and murals.
The gym, open 24/7, boasts two Peloton bikes, ellipticals, treadmills, free weights, and more—no excuses for skipping a workout here! The hotel rooms were exactly what you’d expect from an AC Hotel: modern, comfortable, and well-appointed.

Despite the $30 destination fee, the hotel compensates with a $30 food & beverage credit. Given our late arrival, we opted to stay in and enjoy the rooftop bar, Elevar. My complimentary spritzer, thanks to my Marriott status, was a refreshing start to our vacation. We dined on chicken quesadillas and fish tacos, recommended by the friendly bartender, and shared some chips and guacamole. Watching the sunset from the rooftop while our food was grilled fresh right by the bar was a delightful experience.



The Prelude: Calle Ocho Beckons
Our ship’s boarding time was 4:30 pm, granting us a leisurely window to explore Miami. Little Havana awaited—a district where the sun seemed to dance with the pavement, and the air hummed with the rhythm of Latin beats. As we stepped onto Calle Ocho, the iconic Eighth Street, live music enveloped us. The famous Ball & Chain beckoned, promising a lively introduction to our food tour adventure.

El Pub: Where Empanadas Whisper Secrets
Our first stop—El Pub. The name itself carried a hint of nostalgia. Standing at the pick up counter bar, we discovered picadillo empanadas—golden pockets of savory delight. The flavors burst forth: seasoned ground beef, olives, and a slight spice—a symphony of tastes. But it was the colada—a shared Cuban coffee—that stole the show. Brewed with brown sugar, it danced on our tongues, mellowing any bitterness. El Pub became an instant favorite.

Sala’o: Sandwiches and Mojitos, Oh My!

Next, Sala’o—a cozy spot with a promise of Cuban authenticity and a bit of air conditioning. The aroma of pressed sandwiches greeted us. We had the classic Cuban sandwich—a harmonious blend of roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, all pressed to perfection. And the mojito? A revelation. Not too sweet, not too strong—just right. Our guide, Mariela, regaled us with tales of Cuban sandwich origins, igniting a friendly rivalry between Tampa and Miami versions.

Cuban Tobacco Cigar Co.: Where Smoke Weaves Stories
A short walk led us to the Cuban Tobacco Cigar Co., a family legacy. Here, a master cigar maker deftly rolled 100-150 cigars a day. The air thickened with the scent of tobacco leaves, and we watched, mesmerized. Each cigar held stories—of tradition, craftsmanship, and resilience. These can be purchased and brought home with you without issue!


Churros and Classic Cars: A Whimsical Interlude
Through an alley, classic cars and roosters awaited —a kaleidoscope of colors. We paused to admire their vintage charm. Then, churros called—a crispy embrace dusted with sugar. Thin, delicate, and not overly sweet, they vanished in moments. Our guide had arranged for them to be freshly made—warm and irresistible. Another favorite stop on the tour!



Bay of Pigs and Juicy Refreshment
The Bay of Pigs Invasion monument stood solemnly, a reminder of history’s twists. But the sun blazed, and we craved refreshment. Watermelon and papaya juice arrived—icy relief on a scorching day. The fruits’ sweetness washed over us, rejuvenating our spirits. This family-owned business is one of the oldest in Little Havana. We were lucky enough to watch the 84-year-old mother and her son make this fresh juice just for us.

Guava Pastries: A Sweet Farewell
As the sun dipped low, we savored guava and cream cheese pastries. Flaky layers enveloped the fruity filling—a sweet crescendo to our Little Havana symphony. We were full—of food, of stories, of Miami’s soul.

In Retrospect: A Must-Take Tour
If you find yourself in Miami, heed our advice: Take this tour! Let the flavors of Cuba embrace you, let the streets whisper their tales. And when you bite into that guava pastry, know that you’ve tasted the essence of Little Havana—a place where culture and cuisine intertwine, leaving an imprint on your heart.
